This film takes place
in the summer in Vietnam. There
are three sisters, two are married and the youngest is single. She lives with her older twin
brother. The oldest sister’s
husband has another woman and child on an island. The middle sister has just found out she is having a
baby. They are excited about their
news but want to keep it to themselves in the early months.
I tried but I could
not get interested in this film. I
found it difficult to keep the three women in their roles. Since they are supposed to be sisters,
they look slightly alike and it blurs who they are for me. I didn’t understand their actions in
some of the scenes too. 2 ½* (This
movie is so-so)
112
min, Drama directed by Tran Anh Hung with Tran Nu Yen-Khe, Nhu Quynh Nguyen, Le
Khanh, Quang Hai Ngo, Chu Hung, Manh Cuong Tran.
Note: Imdb 7.2 out of 10, 82% critic 86%
audience on Rotten Tomatoes, Roger Ebert 3*, Amazon 4.0* out of 5* with 40
reviews.
Special
Note: Filmed in Halong Bay and
Hanoi, Vietnam. Tran Anh Hung in
the character of the youngest sister is the wife of the director. One reviewer said that her Vietnamese
is poor compared with the other actors. Tran Anh Hung also directed The Scent of Green Papaya of 1993
and I think this film is much better than Vertical Ray of the Sun.
