On September 5, 1975
Miles Davis retired from music and retreated to his Upper West Side apartment. He was able to live for six years
because of a special financial retainer issued by Columbia Records. He was supposed to working on music for
them and he received $20,000 a month in the mail. Dave Braden, a reporter came to see him from Rolling Stone
hoping to get an interview. The
reporter took Miles to Columbia so he could complain about his check not coming
that month. There are flashbacks
showing the career of Miles up to his retirement and his marriage to Frances
Taylor.
Miles is messed up,
he doesn’t want to do anything about it and he doesn’t want to acknowledge
it. He had his glory days but now
he’s just old. No one knows if he
still has what it takes to play the trumpet or write music? Columbia is hoping that he can get
himself back together but they may have to give up. Nothing is sugarcoated about his life. 3 1/2* (I liked this movie)
