One of the missions
of the US Government is to return the remains of US soldiers killed in other
countries to the United States.
This provides a dignified resting place for them and also allows closure
for the relatives. Forty underwater archaeologists
and technical divers excavate the wreckage of the B-24 Liberator bomber Tulsamerican. They are hoping to find out what
happened to the three airmen that went down with the plane. German
planes shot down the bomber and it crashed off the coast of Croatia in 1944
during WWII. There was a design
problem with the B-24. During a crash, the nose and wing section would separate from the body and flip upside
down.
This plane crashed in
December 1944 and has been on the bottom for 70 years. The divers are hoping to find any bone fragments from the three men. DNA can
be extracted from bone and a match can be made to determine which one of the
airmen they have found. Large suction tubes bring material from around and inside the
plane to the surface. All this
material is sifted through wire frames to check for bones. There are also scenes with the family
members talking about their relative that was lost in the plane.
