A Perfect Getaway 2009

For their honeymoon, newlyweds Cliff and Cydney head to the tropical islands of Hawaii.  While journeying through the beautiful countryside, the couple encounters Kale and Cleo.  They are two disgruntled hitchhikers.  They also meet Nick and Gina.  They are two wild but well-meaning people who help guide them through the lush jungles.  The picturesque waterfalls and scenic mountainsides quickly give way to terror when Cliff and Cydney learn of a grisly murder that occurred nearby.  They realize that they are being followed by chance acquaintances that suspiciously fit the description of the killers!!

This tense "trouble in paradise" thriller has lots of bloody violence from fistfights, beatings, shootings, stabbings and even mutilation of a murder victim (shown on screen).  There is also some drinking and drug use, a good bit of strong language and scenes with naked male and female buttocks (plus some implied not wearing of tops).  This review is for the theatrical rated version of the film.  3 1/2* (I liked this movie)

98 min, Drama directed and written by David Twohy with Milla Jovovich, Steve Zahn, Timothy Olyphant, Kiele Sanchez, Marley Shelton, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Ruiviviar, Dale Dicky, Peter Navy Tuiasosopo, Wendy Braun, Jim Cruz, Angela Sun, Leandra Gillis, Amit Yogev, Carlos Alberto Lopez.

Note:  Imdb 6.5* out of 10* with 68213 reviews, Rotten Tomatoes 62% with 138 critic reviews 51% with 100,000+ audience score, Metacritic 63 out of 100 with 22 critic reviews 6.1* out of 10* with 118 user scores, Common Sense Media, James Rocchi 3* out of 5*, age 17+, 2* consumerism, 3* sex, drinking, drugs & smoking, 4* violence, Language, Amazon 4.6* out of 5* with 1862 reviews.

Special Note:  Director David Twohy has been quoted in recent interviews as saying he had to battle with the studio to allow the movie to continue on with an R-rating instead of a PG-13 version.  The movie takes place in Hawaii and Timothy Olyphant was born in Honolulu Hawaii and he lived there the first 2 years of his life.  Minutes 30-32:  Nick talks to Cliff about a dictator's palace with a lock-box full of 'Avengers' memorabilia including 'Iron Man’.  Timothy Olyphant was considered for the role of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe/Avengers series that stared Chris Hemsworth (Kale) as Thor.  At 00:16:14 and 00:30:14, Timothy Olyphant’s character talks about Nicolas Cage, he was his Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) costar.

Mistakes:  In the first scene, Cydney hangs her feet out of the jeep and they are almost hit by a tree while passing. A short while after, this scene, it is noticeable that she has red nail polish on her toenails. Later on in the movie various scenes that show her feet and she no longer has nail polish?  When Nick and Cliff go 'hunting' it is pouring rain.  When Cliff returns to the campsite, he is completely dry and his hair is perfectly combed.  When Nick returns he is partially wet?  The headrests in Cliff and Cydney's Jeep are missing during interior shots then reappear during long exterior shots.  The removal of headrests from seats has been a common practice in movies for decades.  It provides more visibility while filming inside automobiles.  This can usually be spotted by looking for the two mounting holes at the top of the seat which are visible once the headrests have been removed.  At the waterfall scene, Chris Hemsworth's first scenes are revealing low riding shorts for eye candy purposes.  His hands are holding his shirt around his neck as the shot bounces back and forth.  On the last view back to Chris, the shorts are at normal waist level?
