Based on a novel by Margaret Laurence. Hagar Shipley is 90 years old but she’s not ready to go into
a nursing home. She lives in
Manitoba with her oldest son, Marvin and his wife. She has gaps in her memory but otherwise she is doing pretty
well. She has been to the doctor
and he ran some tests, they need to wait a week for the results. Hagar starts thinking about her past
and this story is told in flashbacks. What she really wants to do is get out of town before this nursing home idea gets
out of hand. She cashes her check
that was supposed to go to her son by direct deposit and heads out for the
seaside home where she used to live.
It must have been a difficult job to write this screenplay based on a hefty
Canadian novel that spans decades.
I was surprised that Christine Home looked so much like Ellen Burstyn
would probably have looked in her younger years.
There is an emotional punch in looking back on her life. 3 ½* (I liked this movie)
115 min, Drama directed by Kari Skogland with Ellen Burstyn,
Christine Home, Cole Hauser, Ellen Page, Sheila McCarthy, Kevin Zegers, Dylan
Baker, Samantha Weinstein.
Note:
Blockbuster 3*, imdb 6.1 out of 10, 39% critic 58% audience on Rotten
Tomatoes.
