This film is about the world of plus-size modeling and the women working these jobs. They are fighting to throw out the distorted perception of body image in people’s minds. Incredibly tall and lean figures are on the runways, in the magazines and they are the high fashion models. They are required to be 5”8 to 5’11 with a dress size of 4-6 and a bust size of 34. Plus size models are generally size 12 and up with good body proportions. A guideline is waist 10 inches smaller than hips. The plus size models are not on the covers of fashion magazines and they are not walking the high fashion runways. The average American woman wears a size 16 to 18.
The high dollar modeling jobs go to the non-plus size models. The plus size models don’t bring in as much money. It is also more difficult to get representation by agents in the plus size category. There are some models in this plus size category that have made it big such as Ashley Graham, Jessica Leahy, Chloe Marshall, Danika Brysha, Lexi Placourakis.
One of the featured models in the plus size is Elly Mayday. She was working as a flight attendant for Sunwing Airlines and then she became a model. She started having symptoms and she was finally diagnosed with ovarian cancer stage III in 2013 at the age of 25. She had four surgeries and she was told she was cancer free. Then her disease recurred and she passed away in March 2019 at the age of 30. This is a very moving story and Elly’s real name was Ashley Shandrel Luther. 5* (I really liked this movie)
