After King Neptune's crown is stolen, SpongeBob and Patrick go on a quest lasting 6 days to retrieve his crown. On the way, SpongeBob and Patrick defeat many evildoers using their brains and brawn. While this is happening, someone is taking over Bikini Bottom? SpongeBob and Patrick must defeat this mastermind!!
This movie based on the TV character SpongeBob has cartoon violence with some mature elements. Including drunken knife fights that some parents may not feel comfortable with in a cartoon. Also, expect crude humor, name-calling and many commercial tie-ins. Bikini Bottom seems to have an economy that is entirely fast-food-driven and this may pose a problem for families trying to teach children to eat sensibly.
Supposedly, Mr. Krab, the owner of Krusty Krab restaurant has been framed for stealing the crown. Shell City is the destination for SpongeBob and Patrick on their search for the crown. Numerous obstacles stand or float in their way to a successful mission!! I thought this was a very funny film!! 5* (I liked this movie)

Special Note: This film was intended to be the series finale of SpongeBob SquarePants 1999. But the show was renewed for a fourth season due to the film's success and the show's popularity. An 11-foot long David Hasselhoff figure was built so cameramen could film without straining the real Hasselhoff. Hasselhoff’s part was written before the actor was approached for this role!! He readily agreed without reading the script and largely at the behest of his daughters. The original "cover-up" plot of the film had SpongeBob going to rescue Patrick from a fisherman in Florida. This was an obvious reference to the film Finding Nemo(2003). It was later revealed by Tom Kenny to be just a "joke" plot that he made up to keep fans interested.
Mistakes: At the end of the movie, SpongeBob tells Squidward that his "fly" is down. Yet Squidward doesn't wear any pants? Towards the end of the movie, the bucket head people walk through the windows of the Krusty Krab, breaking them. In the very next shot you can see the windows are fixed. King Neptune puts a lock on the door to make sure Mindy does not get back in but when the bucket heads break through there is no lock on the door? When Mr. Krab and King Neptune listen to Plankton's fake message, at the end we hear the click of the phone hanging up? When King Neptune bellows with rage a few minutes later, Plankton is still on the phone and he is able to hear it.
Trivia: There is also The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run 2020 and The Spongebob Squarepants Movie: Rehydrated 2021.
