A film about Christopher Columbus
is being shot in Cochabamba, Bolivia. This location was selected because the director and producer can
hire many local people as extras for a small daily salary. The film is
based upon the early explorations of Columbus and how the Spaniards treated the
Indians. The project starts off on the wrong foot when an open casting is
called and a very long line of people have been waiting for hours to be seen
about roles. They are told that only a few people can be seen but there
is nearly a riot when this is announced. Matters become more problematic
when the people begin protesting against the government over privatization of
the water supply. The people feel that water is life, they are paying too
much for water and water is being shut off.
A lot of tension among the local
people and the film people plus the added violence of the riots. It
doesn’t help at all that the theme of the movie is about the inhuman treatment
of the indigenous people! You really wonder how this is going to turn
out? Definably a lot of drama!! 3 ½* (I liked this movie)
