Walt
Disney talked to P.L. Travers about obtaining the rights to film Mary Poppins
but it took 20 years. He had
promised his daughters he would film their favorite book. Travers comes to Los Angeles for two
weeks in 1961. She has final
approval of the film and she complains about everything every day. Walt didn’t realize at first that
Travers is very attached to this story.
She had a first class ticket, the best hotel, many gifts sent to her room, a driver
for her use and the writers are trying to follow her every instruction. It doesn’t work and she flies back to
England without signing over the rights.
Thompson
and Hanks are both double Academy Award winners. I wanted to see this in the theater but other critics said
this film was full of shameless corporate PR. I didn’t find that to be true at all and the back story
about trying to make this film is very interesting plus her early life
experiences. 4* (I really liked
this movie)
