This
film is based on a French graphic novel La Transperceneige and is set in the
year of 2031. An experiment to
turn around global warming has resulted in the entire world frozen in ice
except for those aboard the Snowpiercer.
This is a train that has been traveling the world for 17 years without stopping. What the people on the back of the
train don’t know is that there is a class system. When they revolt and break through the doors separating the
train sections, they discover different layers of wealth and posh lifestyles. They have been in crowded, dirty,
miserable conditions with the same diet every day of protein bars.
One
of the things I don’t like about this film is the darkness and dirt of the first
section that focuses on the lower level people at the back. There is a lot of violence and cruelty in this film too. Some of the actors are unrecognizable in
their roles. 2* (I didn't like this movie)
126
min, Action directed by Joon-ho Bong with Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda
Swinton, Ed Harris, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewne Bremner.
Note: Imdb 7.0 out of 10, 95% critic 73%
audience on Rotten Tomatoes, Roger Ebert 3 ½*.
Special
Note: There was a confrontation
between distributor Harvey Weinstein and the director, Joon-ho Bong. Harvey disliked the 126-minute version
and he demanded removal of 20 minutes before release of the film. Bong refused to change the cut and
Weinstein slashed the distribution plan to limited release in select theaters
only.
