The Danish Girl 2015

The setting of this film is Copenhagen, Denmark of 1926 and it is based on a fictional novel by David Ebershoff.  Gerda Wegener is married to Einar and she is a gifted Danish painter.  Einar also does some painting but he sticks to the same landscape subject from his past.  Gerda starts to paint Einar as the woman Lili Elbe and she starts to have success in her career with these paintings.  Unfortunately, changes begin in their relationship and in their marriage.
This film is not an actual biography because many elements of Einar Wegener’s story have been changed.  I didn’t know anything about the subject of this film, I only knew there was a lot of buzz during the award season.  I wonder, if this story is interesting on it’s own, why was a fictional novel used as the basis and how can it be listed in the biography category?  3 1/2* (I liked this movie)

119 min, Bio directed by Tom Hooper with Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Amber Heard, Adrian Schiller, Emerald Fennell, Henry Pettigrew, Ben Whishaw, Pip Torrens, Matthais Schoenaerts, Richard Dixon.

Note:  Imdb 7.0 out of 10, 69% critic 73% audience on Rotten Tomatoes, Roger Ebert 2 ½*, Amazon 4.4* out of 5* with 1000 reviews.
Special Note:  There was controversy over Vikander’s Oscar Nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role instead of Leading Actress.  Gerda has more screen time and more dialogue than Einar and Redmayne won for Best Actor?  This film won many awards including Academy Awards for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design.  The dog is this film is very cute and her name in the film is Pixie but Hvappe in her real dog life.
