Jeannie is married to Frank Tennant and they have nearly saved enough money to purchase a house for their family of four. Jeannie discovers she is pregnant and she becomes very upset. She has been toning up her body at Trixie’s Keep Fit classes. Jeannie and her husband were not planning on having any more children. Frank doesn’t mind another child but Jeannie is determined not to have this baby. She asks Dr. Turner and Trixie for help but the only legal reasons for abortions in the UK are if the health or sanity of the mother are at risk? Jeannie’s mother had seven children in 11 years and more than one nervous breakdown. Jeannie and her younger siblings were cared for in foster homes. Frank and Jeannie both have jobs and she thinks she can only manage two children.
Enid and her daughter Cilla are having babies at the same time. Instead of bonding over these circumstances they are at odds and arguing. Cilla is diagnosed with toxemia. This is a serious condition known today as preeclampsia. This is a sudden increase in blood pressure after the 20th week of pregnancy and it can be life threatening to the mother and the baby. Five to eight percent of pregnancies result in preeclampsia. Enid and Cilla reconcile their differences after this emergency.
I was a little bit surprised about the birth control and abortion conversations? Poplar has really moved forward from the original Poplar from earlier episodes. This time period is 1964, legal and safe abortions will not be provided by medical personnel until 1967. 5* (I really like this series)
