The Kims are a poor family living in a shabby and cramped half basement apartment. The neighborhood is a busy lower working class commercial district of Seoul. There is mother and father Chung-sook and Kitaek plus their young adult children, son Ki-woo and daughter Ki-jung. Often as a group, they initiate minor scams to make a living. When they do have jobs, they do the least amount of work necessary. Ki-woo dreams of escaping from poverty and going to university. A stroke of luck comes to Ki-woo!! His university student friend Min is leaving and going abroad for education. Min asks Ki-woo to take over his tutoring job with Park Da-hye. Min has plans to return and date Park Da-hye when she is also in university. The Parks are a very wealthy family and they have lived for four years in their modern house designed by famed architect Namgoong.
Ki-woo can’t believe his luck!! Park Da-hye is smart and beautiful!! What a job!! The family begins to take over all the jobs held by other workers in the Park family. Housekeeper, tutor, art teacher, chauffeur. Now they are living the life!! Job security, money, food, drinks. Only Chung-sook, the housekeeper lives in the Park home and the other family members go back to their sad apartment situation in the evening. There us a ray of hope for the Kims when the Park family goes on a camping trip. This means they all can stay at the Park home until they return. I am indecisive about my review rating?? There are sections of scenes that I give a 4* and for other scenes I switch to a 2*?? (This is my first double review!!)
There are a LOT of twists in this film and I didn’t have a clue they were coming?? Including, a very nice calm before a terrific storm for the family!! A heavy rain with flooding and a very big twist with their situation!! A few scenes of extremely strong violence, blood and gore. Stabbing, fighting, hitting with blunt objects and death. Plenty of swearing, heavy drinking, smoking and staggering drunk scenes.

Special Note: The Park house was a set completely built for this film. The design featured lines that clearly divided the Parks and the Kims. The job of tutor is really the only way a very poor family would connect with a wealthy family.
