This
series takes place in the seaside village of Portween. It’s a small community and everyone
knows everyone else and their business.
The new local doctor is Dr. Martin Ellingham, he was formerly a London
surgeon but he developed an aversion to the sight of blood. He doesn’t have much of a bedside
manner but his Aunt Joan raised him in the area. She has a small farm and a few animals. The villagers will need to get used to
his gruff, abrupt, intolerant manner and his interest only in issues concerning
medicine. They are not lacking a
competent and thorough doctor but just a chatty one.
This
is very good, funny and enjoyable. The
headmistress of the local school, Lousia Glasson and Doc Martin like each other
but they can’t have a conversation without it ending in misunderstandings. Doc has a habit of walking very stiffly
and yelling make way when he’s headed for an emergency. The emergencies seem to happen every day. 4 1/2* (I loved this series)

The BBC series Poldark (1975-77), BBC drama serial The Nightmare Man (1981), films Oscar and Lucinda and Saving Grace plus the drama The Shell Seekers were all filmed here. An additional series 7 will start filming in 2015.
