Yuki’s mother's husband and
brother were murdered because of a scam perpetrated by four criminals. The government decreed that all young
men must register for the draft.
The criminals took money from poor villagers saying the men would be
exempt from the draft because of the payment. When Yuki’s parents and her brother came to the village, the
criminals killed the men. Yuki’s
mother was tortured for three days but not killed. She killed one of the criminals and she was sentenced to prison for
life. Her only way to obtain
revenge against the crimes is to have a baby to carry on her fury. Yuki is born in prison but her mother
dies during her birth. Yuki
begins training at a young age to avenge her family. In her life, she knows no love but only training.
This movie is based
on four volumes of manga by writer Kazuo Koike and artist Kazuo Kamimura. A manga is a comic book created in
Japan following a style developed in the late 19th century. This film has numbered chapters, plenty
of action, sword fights plus copious amounts of overly red blood? I don’t think real people could produce
blood of this color or quantity? During watching this movie, I was reminded of another movie,
Manos: The Hands of Fate released in 1966. Manos may be the worst movie I’ve ever watched? Lady Snowblood gets much better reviews
but it’s up there in my category of worst movies? It must be that I’m not much of a fan of this genre but I do
like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of
the Golden Flower, Memoirs of a Geisha and Lust Caution. 1 ½* (I really
didn’t like this
movie)
97
min, Action directed by Toshiya Fujita with Meiko Kaji, Toshio Kurosawa,
Masaaki Daimon, Miyoko Akaza, Shinichi Uchida, Takeo Chii.
Note: Imdb 7.7 out of 10, 84% audience on
Rotten Tomatoes, Amazon 4.1* out of 5* with 28 reviews.
Special
Note: This film provided
the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2. I saw Kill Bill Volume 1 but I am not a fan.
