This film is based on
the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving. In 1958, they go to Washington DC to get married. When they get back home in Virginia,
they are both arrested because it’s against the law in this county and state
for different races to marry.
Richard is released because he has been bailed out but Mildred will have
to wait until the weekend is over.
One of her relatives will need to come to the jail and post bail for
her. This is more complicated
because she is expecting a baby.
Richard talks to the police officers but they have no sympathy for the couple or their incarceration.
This movie is very
good. The Loving’s really care for
each other and it doesn’t matter to them that their races are different. They just want to be married and be
together just like other couples.
After they are arrested, the judge states they can be released if
they leave Virginia and not return for 25 years. Otherwise, they will go to prison for their crime. This is very difficult for Mildred because she loves her
family and she doesn't want to leave them. I liked the cars of the
period. Richard and his friends
are into racing them too. 4* (I
really liked this movie)

Loving’s obituary of 2008 in the New York Times stated her ancestry was part
African American and part Native American from both of her parents. A lot of the information for this film
was taken from Nancy Buirski’s documentary The Loving Story of 2011. Documentary footage from the mid 1960’s
was discovered and used in this film.
The actual Virginia jail where the Loving’s were taken is shown in those
scenes. Caroline County Circuit
Court Judge Leon M. Bazile wrote that God created the races and he placed them
on separate continents. The races
were separated because He did not intend for the races to mix.
