This film is based on a novel by Catherine Cookson. Edward MacFell is a prosperous Northumberland farmer but he has a sadistic side? He routinely hurts and humiliates family members and workers alike. He goes too far and he becomes the victim of a murder made to appear as an accident. Charlie is his mild-mannered son and he witnesses the crime and protects the killer. It is because Charlie believes in friendship and justice. There is another witness, Ginger Slater. He is an embittered farm hand and he is thinking about blackmail!! Charlies enters into a disastrous marriage to Victoria Chapman and she is a promiscuous county belle. Both Charlie and Victoria don’t know that Victoria’s sister is in love with Charlie. The time comes when Charlie is tired of his sister’s complaining and his wife’s infidelities. He signs up as an enlisted man for WWI. He finds himself in the company of a sergeant with an axe to grind!! This man is Sgt. Ginger Slater.
The whole truth is that most people think that Charlie MacFell is a loser and he was born a loser?? Actually Charlie is in search of himself. Unfortunately, he will learn a lot more about himself at the Western Front in this war!! Probably, Charlie is too nice?? 4* (I really liked this movie)
