The Ranger, the Cook and a Hole in the Sky 1995

Legendary veteran Montana ranger Bill Bell teaches young ranger Mac about the great forces of nature.  Mac is also learning honor, trust and integrity.  The year is 1919 and this was a time when being a ranger meant more than a job operating expensive equipment.  Forest fires were fought with guts and courage and without chemicals and airplanes.  Bill Bell was the toughest ranger in an elite crew of very rugged men.  Mac does everything to remain in the good graces of Bell.  Working together grows into a friendship with hilarious and heroic rites of passage.  One of the crew members is Hawkes and he is a professional gambler and card shark plus he's an expert at manipulating a deck of cards.  Only Bill knows about the skill Hawkes has with cards.
The wilderness and its beauty are emphasized with arduous hiking, camping. forest work and relationships.  Sometimes Mac is jealous of Bill and it makes him grumpy.  Sometimes he just wants to argue with Bill.  Mac is supposed to help the cook but he always wonders why Hawkes will never play cards with the other men?  Hawkes only says that he never plays cards with the crew?  There are dangers out here in the forest.  Snakes, heavy rain, strong winds, the use of dynamite, loneliness and also the possibility of fires.  4* (I really liked this movie)
