This
film is an adaptation of a novel by Lawrence Block featuring the character Matt
Scudder. The setting is New York between 1991 and 1999. Matt
used to be a cop but now he works as a private eye. A drug dealer hires him to find the men who kidnapped and
killed his wife. He paid the
ransom but they still killed her.
At first, Matt refuses the case until he learns how Carrie was killed. He begins to investigate and he
believes this kind of crime as been done by the same men before. The women being kidnapped are linked to
drug dealers. Matt is ready to
give up until a fourteen year-old girl is taken from her home.
This
is a harsh film because of the behavior of the kidnappers. They target the dealers because they
know they have money on hand. They
have no qualms about not living up to any type of bargain they have made with the relatives. 3* (This movie is OK)
