This movie is based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Nobel Prize winner Imre
Kertesz. Gyorgy Koves is fourteen
years old when WWII comes to Hungary in 1944. His father is sent to a work camp and Gyorgy is sent to a
concentration camp. He’s moved
around a lot to different camps and his last stop is Buchenwald. The men try to help him as
much as they can with advice about his mental and physical health. They also try to help him to keep his dignity and self-esteem. Gyorgy follows what they s
ay until he
becomes too week from overwork, exhaustion and hunger to think or care about
anything.
This film has almost
colorless tones washed over with sepia and grey. Hints of color occasionally appear and it’s very fitting for the grimness of
the subject. Gyorgy’s only goal and it kept him going was returning to Budapest. When the Americans liberated the camp, he was discouraged from
returning to Budapest but in his mind he had no choice. 3 ½* (I liked this movie)
