Smith Bhatnagar is a
10 year-old boy from India and he lives in a small town outside of New York in
1979. Smith wants to embrace the
American Dream but his parents want to preserve their heritage and rituals from
India. Barbecues are difficult since the family is vegetarian.
Halloween is another custom not celebrated in India. Smith likes the girl next door
Amy and her father is a cowboy with
an Indian motorcycle. There are
many differences between the families.
This is funny in many
instances. Smith’s mother makes him a Halloween
costume representing one of the gods worshiped in India. None of the Americans recognize the
costume? Smith’s father agrees
that he can go hunting with Amy’s father.
Later, his parents try to find them because Smith’s father realizes after the
fact what hunting really is? 3*
