David Suchet takes a
journey around Britain to more fully understand Agatha Christie and her work as
a mystery writer. She is the
best-selling author of all time and David Suchet has played Hercule Poirot in 70
films based on her books. Mathew
Prichard is Agatha’s grandson and he shows David some of the memorabilia of
Agatha’s life. She grew up on the
seaside in the south of England.
The death of her father when she was 11 years old left the family in an uncertain
economic situation. She married
Archibald Christie in 1914 and he was sent to France to fight in WWI. After the war in 1926, Archie asked
Agatha for a divorce in order to marry Nancy Neele. Agatha was devastated by this request. In 1928, she left England for Istanbul
and she married archaeologist Max Mallowan in 1930.
It was interesting to see David
Suchet as himself and not as a character he is portraying. The life of Agatha Christie is very
interesting as well. Her mother
didn’t want Agatha to read until she was eight years old but Agatha taught
herself to read? Basically she was
an average person but she had a vivid imagination. She served in the war as a nurse and worked in a
pharmacy. She became familiar with
poisons and she used this method for murder in her many of her novels. She jotted down ideas as soon as she
thought of them in many journals.
She also wrote stage plays and The Mousetrap was very successful and long
running. 3 ½* (I liked this movie)
