This
is based on the true story of 130,000 British children secretly sent abroad to
commonwealth countries. Margaret
Humphreys is a social worker in Nottingham in the 1980’s. She discovers that the British and
Australian governments worked together to send British children who still had a
living parent to Australia. The
children were told their parents were dead, they were excited and expected to
pick oranges off trees and enjoy the sunshine. That is not what happened, they had one pair of clothes,
lived in institutions, they worked and some were abused.
Margaret’s
job was to help the now adult children try to find out about their
parents. She faced bullying from
some of the Australians, denial from the governments and separation from her
husband and children. It was an
overwhelming job with a line around the block of people wanting to give her
their information. The only
problem with this film even considering the somber subject is it is so dry, it
seems like a history report? 3*
