Set in 1941 in a Nazi occupied French town, Marie discovers that she is successful at performing abortions and she can raise the standard of living for her family. She meets a prostitute who becomes her friend and she discovers she can make money by charging her and another woman rent. Her husband Paul comes home from the war but she ignores him to follow her "new" life. Things take a sharp turn when one of her customers dies and her husband becomes fed up.
Huppert does an excellent job in this film which makes the characters seem real. She becomes trapped in the reach for money and forgets about the dangers. 3 1/2* (I liked this movie)
