Based
on Hunter S. Thompson's first novel, American journalist Paul Kemp
begins a freelance job in Puerto Rico for a local newspaper during the
1950's. He struggles to find a balance between island culture, the
expatriates who live there and his alcoholism. In the beginning, he is
staying at a local hotel but his newspaper boss does not like the fact
that he has consumed nearly 200 small bottles of alcohol from the hotel
room's mini-bar refrigerator? Kemp was under the impression that the
small bottles were free? Aren't the long distance calls free as well.
He is instructed to find other living quarters immediately!! He moves
in with one of the newspaper
photographers, it's an OK place, he has a car and a fighting
rooster.
The
premise for this film was very good but it is just not
executed with enough vim and vigor. There are very funny moments but
they are few and far between, just too much plodding in the rest. 3*
