Harry
Gordon Selfridge is the flamboyant, gregarious and visionary American founder
of Selfridge & Co. Department Store in London. This store is built from a vacant lot and the cofounder
pulls out of the project before the start of building. Harry hires many people to work in the
store and sends some of them all over the world to buy wares to sell. The store must be special, it must be
impeccable and it must prosper.
Harry treats the store and the employees as members of his family. He does have a darker side and he
enters into an affair with stage star Ellen Love. He names her the muse of the store. Harry’s wife Rose is used to many other
women in and out of Harry’s life.
Rose discovers bohemian artist Roddy during a gallery visit and he
begins her portrait. Roddy falls
in love with Rose but she tries to keep her distance and she is using
another name rather than Selfridge.
I
really enjoyed this series and I look forward to viewing season 2. PBS is showing season 3 on their
network now and a season 4 is planned for 2016. This reminds me a lot of Downton Abbey which has just
finished showing it’s fifth season.
Amazon viewers are many in number with 6,374 favorable reviews! I like the development of the
characters so you become involved with them and their lives. 4* (I really liked this series)
