This film is adapted
from a play written by the director, Israel Horovitz. Mathias Gold is an American who inherits an apartment in
France when his father dies. He
travels to inspect the property and he’s surprised to learn that Mathilde
Girard and her daughter have an arrangement requiring Mathias to pay them
monthly rent. This agreement is
called a viager, an ancient French real estate system with complex rules
regarding sales. Mathidle was the
apartment’s prior owner, the new owner can buy the place cheaply and pay the
prior owner a monthly fee. The new
owner will inherit the property when the prior owner passes away. Mathias was hoping to receive a sizable
sum of money from the sale of this apartment since his father left his money to
charity.
This film is listed as
a comedy but there isn’t anything funny?
Everyone is glum except Maggie Smith. Mathias and Chloe don’t know what to do with their lives and
they blame their parents for their mistakes. Aren’t these two old enough to take responsibility for their own
actions and choices? Isn’t it just passing the
buck to continually blame your parent?
