Mali
is a young wife who gives birth to twins in Laos. Their family has the belief that twins are a bad omen
and they need to be killed. One of
the babies is stillborn with the cord around the neck. She convinces her older female relative,
Taitok, that they can bury the dead child and not tell anyone that Ahlo was a
twin. Ten years later the family
is displaced due to the completion of a huge dam and the flooding
of their village. There is a
terrible accident during the hauling of their goods and Mali is killed. Both Taitok and Ahlo's father, Toma,
believe it is Ahol’s fault. The
family faces many more problems when they reach the relocation camp.
This
is a good story with a good conclusion but with a very somber basis. The poverty, superstition, harshness,
shunning by community are heavy burdens. 3* (This
movie is OK)
