This
film is inspired by the true experiences in 2004 of the director. Maud is a filmmaker and she suffers a
large cerebral hemorrhage. She is
hospitalized for five months and she does improve after physical therapy. She has paralysis of her left arm and
hand plus her left leg. She can
get around with a cane and luckily she is right handed. She is determined to begin her latest
film project and she feels ready three years later. She watches a TV talk show featuring an interview with
Vilko. He is a con man and he is
an expert in swindling celebrities.
Maud would like him as the male lead even though he’s been convicted,
served time and he’s not an actor.
Over a period of 18 months, he took advantage of her diminished
capabilities by asking for a series of ‘loans.’
This
is good, Maud becomes wrapped in a web of spin by Vilko. He is charming, attractive, available
and he is not put off by her physical limitations. Maud’s world has been severely reduced in scope and her
contact with other people has decreased. Huppert does an excellent job in this role. 3 ½* (I liked this film)
