In 1938 Prague, Emil is a radio reporter
married to the very beautiful Hana. She is an actress with a new film that has
catapulted her into fame. As the Nazis come to power, Hana's Jewish
heritage causes her to fall from stardom to the bottom rung of the social
ladder. In order to protect her, Emil compromises himself
collaborating with the new
Nazi-controlled state radio station. Emil starts enjoying the
attention and respect that had previously evaded him but his fidelity
and loyalty toward his wife begins to falter. The assassination of the Third Reich Deputy Protector and a chance bicycle encounter bring their lingering marriage to a crisis.
Don't
expect lightness and happiness from a wartime Czechoslovakian film!
The actors draw you into their characters, you really want something
good to happen to Emil and Hana. 3 1/2* (I liked this movie)
