This
film tells Tomi’s story from his birth in Strasbourg, France in 1931 until the
present day. He was the youngest
of four children and his father died in 1935. The family was poor now and they moved to Logelbach, near
Colmar. He lived through the time
of the occupation of Alsace and their lives were taken over by the
Germans. Tomi felt all his
artistic talent as an illustrator and children’s book author was passed on to
him the moment his father died. He
moved to New York with $60 in his pocket in 1956. He became very successful through his illustrations in The
New Yorker magazine and books published by Harper & Row.
This
is enjoyable and very informative.
Many examples of Tomi’s work are shown as well as other art pieces that
influenced his work. He also tells
his story himself through interviews.
