This
film takes place in an emergency hospital over a 24 hour period in Oakland,
California. Most of the patients
are uninsured, some have jobs and some are unemployed. They come here because they don’t have
insurance and can’t get appointments with doctors.
Everyone waiting is sorted into categories based on how urgently they
need to be seen. One patient
waited seven hours to get 500mg of an over-the-counter pain medication. When patients with bullet wounds arrive
at the hospital by ambulance, all the waiting patients are bumped and those bleeding
are seen right away. The staff and
the doctors do the best they can with the resources they have.
I’m
very GLAD I have health insurance and I can go to a different emergency
room serving fewer people. I’m
also very GLAD I can make an appointment for routine care or urgent care during
the day. Fortunately, this
hospital is there for people to go for help them without insurance. It takes more time to get seen but the workers
still care as much as they can about each person. 3* (This movie is OK)
