Before All Others 2016

Rachel is a young woman and she is suddenly diagnosed with an auto-immune disease.  Her symptoms are mild in the beginning but over a short time she can’t walk anymore.  She asks her estranged grandmother if she can come and stay with her.  Rachel hasn’t seen Rose since she was a little girl.  Rose is widowed and lonely but helping Rachel gives her a new purpose in life.  Rachel didn't know that the family as a 20-year-old secret.

Rachel was working as a dental assistant but she now has GBS (Guillain-Barre syndrome).  It is a disease that affects the legs and sometimes can be cured with rehab.  This disease is a rare disorder and a person’s own immune system damages the nerves.  The result is muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis.  The symptoms can last for a few weeks to several years.

In the beginning of the relationship between Rachel and Rose, Rachel is distant with Rose because she is ashamed and unnerved by her physical condition.  They begin to grow closer and they help each other.  Rose hires Ben, he is a handyman and Rose asks him to build a wheelchair ramp for Rachel.  Ben invites Rachel to go to the lake with him.  Rachel has a setback when her illness has a flare up and she is paralyzed.  She tells Ben that there is no “us” and Ben is very hurt.  He doesn’t realize that Rachel is pushing him away because she doesn’t want to be a burden on anyone.  Plus, she doesn't like people to see her when she is helpless.  Ben is super sensitive because he has been hurt before.  3 1/2* (I liked this movie)
