Hugo 2011

Hugo (2011)     Adapted from The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.  An orphan boy lives in a Parisian train station, he was sent to live with his drunken uncle after his father's death.  He learned how to wind the massive clocks that run throughout the station and no one knows it's not his uncle doing the work.  He also steals gears, tools and other items from a toy-shop owner until the owner threatens to turn him into the station police officer.
Hugo is alone in his world full of clocks, gears, hiding, sneaking, stealing and spying.  It doesn't change until he meets the goddaughter of the toy shop owner.  Different with remarkable images and color.  3 1/2* (I liked this movie)

This is good, I didn't know what it was about until I started watching it.  It's listed as a comedy but it's more a drama and a man-flick instead of a chick-flick.  3 1/2* (I liked this movie)

WOW, it's all I can say about the reviews of this movie on Rotten Tomatoes.  Out of 26 posted reviews, 20 of them are bad.  The concept is good for this movie but it's very crude and predictable.  3* (This movie is OK)

Budrus 2009

<SPAN id=    Israel's Separation Barrier is being built on the land of the Palestinians instead of on Israeli land.  The olive trees that are the source of income for the Palestinians are being uprooted, these trees are so revered that they are named after their mothers.  Nonviolent protest is the only way to try to get Israel to stop tearing up their trees and land.  The Palestinians believe that Israel has the right to defend their people by building the Separation Barrier just not the plan they are using.
The Israeli Army is enforcing the building of the Barrier and they begin to escalate their treatment of the protestors as they refuse to leave.  When the women become involved, they are also beaten and hit with rubber bullets.   Even after escalating enforcement, the government of Israel finally has to concede and redraw the plan for the Barrier to be built on the land of Israel.  Their effort and success inspires other villages in the area to use the same method to try to save their trees and land.
This is good, you see the desperation of the people because of the value placed on the trees and the loss when they are gone.  The people of Budrus have been living there for a long time and feel strongly that this is their home.  3 1/2* (I liked this movie)

Vanishing on 7th Street 2010

Vanishing on 7th Street (2010)   Shadows in a plague of darkness seem to consume all of society.  Detroit has fallen silent, the power has been cut off and the streets are littered with the clothes of the missing people.  A group of four survivors take refuge in an inner city bar with a generator for power.  They fight for their lives when the lights begin to flicker.
I always think "viewer beware" when I see that John Leguizamo is in the movie, it seems they are always going to be bad?  What about night vision goggles or maybe you don't really want to see what is out there in the dark?  2 1/2* (This movie is just so-so)

The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl 1993

The Wonderful, Horrible Life of <SPAN id=

Leni started out as a dancer but switched to acting after a knee injury.  She made a series of films for Arnold Fanck and she received a Silver Medal at the Venice Film Festival in 1932 for her film Das Blaue Licht which she produced and directed.  Her best known work as a director is a documentary made in 1934 called Triumph of the Will which is of Adolph Hilter and his officers giving speeches with the German Army marching in formations.  She also directed the documentary Olympia 1 and 2 of the Olympics held in Berlin in 1938.  She was never a member of the Nazi party, she lived into her nineties and was also an avid scuba diver.
It is tough decision if you elect to place Leni on the side of the Nazi's and involved with them and their politics or do you place her in the category of a filmmaker doing a project?  Triumph of the Will is under lock and key in Germany and banned from view.  Interesting.  3 1/2* (I liked this movie)

I don't know why Paw Paw has to stay one month at the clinic because of a cut paw, it seems like he should have been able to leave.  Sophie and Jason really get drastic and off the deep end over the cat adoption, how would they have handled the adoption of a child?  I need to start a Weirdmeter like the Tomatometer, this movie would be 3 out of 3 on the scale.  2 1/2* (This movie is so-so)

I was hoping this would be good, the trailer seemed like the movie would be good but it's work just to get to the end.  Too much shallow drama, even the teacher is hard to tell from the students?  2 1/2* (This movie is just so-so)

A Marine Story 2010

A Marine Story (2010)    Alex comes from a family of career military officers, she has a long record of distinguished service in the Marine Corps but she didn't advance in the ranks the way she had hoped.  She comes home after four tours of duty in Iraq, her friends are surprised that she has been discharged during a war and only a year before she would be eligible for a pension.  A friend on the police force asks her to help a young woman who is the only survivor in an accident that killed her parents.  Saffron doesn't feel she deserved to live, has been convicted on drug-related charges and she has been given the choice of prison or the military.
This movie feels like they used a check list to mark off all the cliches they wanted to include, tough woman Marine, check; blond and buff, check; physiological problems, check; hard drinking and hangs out in bars, check; someone out to get her, check; friends and enemies with a lot of problems, check.  Did I leave anything out, you keep hoping the movie will get better but it just does not.  2* (I didn't like this movie)

Mr. Popper's Penguins (2011)    Adapted from the children's book by Richard Atwater.  Tom Popper's father was always off exploring the world, now Tom spends a lot of time on his career but very little time with his children.  After Tom learns his father has died, a crate is delivered to his apartment.  It contains a cute stuffed penguin which turns out to be a real penguin.  Tom calls for a new crate to return the penguin but a phone mix-up causes more penguins to arrive in the new crate.  The biggest problem is that no pets are allows in Tom's apartment?
Because of low ratings and reviews, I didn't expect very much from this movie and sometimes Jim Carrey can be a real pain.  I thought this was enjoyable, the penguins are really cute and they get into and cause a lot of trouble.  3 1/2* (I liked this movie)
