Into the Woods 2014

Into the Woods     This film is a Disney modernization of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hook, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel blended into one tale.  The stories are linked together by the baker and his wife wanting to have a child.
I think this needed sharper editing because 125 minutes is too long.  I didn’t know this was a musical but I could take this without fast-forwarding through the songs!  Johnny Depp is perfectly cast as the Wolf in the story of Little Red Riding Hood.  It seems this film is either loved or hated in reviews?  3* (This movie is OK)

125 min, Adventure Musical directed by Rob Marshall with Anna Kendrick, Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, Daniel Huttlestone, James Corden, Emily Blunt, Christine Baranski, Tammy Blanchard, Lucy Punch, Tracey Ullman, Lilla Crawford, Johnny Depp.

Note:  Imdb 6.0 out of 10, 71% critic 50% audience on Rotten Tomatoes, Roger Ebert 3 ½*, Amazon 3.1* out of 5* with 2,790 reviews.

Special Note:  The lyrics and music are by Stephen Sondheim and the movie was filmed in the United Kingdom.  Three Academy Award nominations were received.  Best Supporting Actress for Meryl Streep (her 14th in this category and 19 overall) and three Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Emily Blunt), Best Supporting Actress (Meryl Streep) – Musical or Comedy.  The film won the Satellite Special Achievement Award for Best Cast, MTV Movie Award for Best Villain to Meryl Streep, Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence.
