Complete Unknown 2016

This shape-shifting tale of the perils and the pleasures of self-reinvention begins at a dinner party.  Tom's (Michael Shannon) co-worker arrives with an intriguing date, Alice (Rachel Weisz).  Tom is convinced he knows her but she refuses to acknowledge their history.  When Alice makes a hasty exit, Tom sets off after her.  What follows is an all-night odyssey shared by two people, one needing to change his life, the other questioning how to stop changing.

We see Alice in a number of completely different settings and jobs, emergency room nurse, magician's assistant, pianist, etc.  Who is this person?  After the opening credits, we get to know Alice and she is now a biologist in New York.  She takes an interest in a guy at the cafeteria and it's not long before they become friends.  They go to a dinner party to celebrate the birthday of her friend's co-worker (Michael Shannon).  Shockingly, the co-worker recognizes her from a prior life of 15 years ago and he confronts her.  Why did she vanish without a trace all those years ago?  Why did she come back?  What she begins to tell him is a very interesting story!!  Tom doesn’t know if he believes what Alice is telling him about her life?  He does know that Alice vanished from his life 15 years ago?  He wants to know why she vanished and why did she come back?

This film focuses on the issues of identity.  Who are you and how can you change that if you want to be different?  There are a lot of complex discussions often accompanied by wine and stronger drinks, they are also about complicated and mature themes.  There's occasional swearing and some suggestive comments as well as kissing.  Things never get too strange but the movie's concepts and subject matter may be most interesting to adults and older teens. 5* (I really liked this movie)
