Christy: A Change of Seasons 2001, Episode 1, 2001

This miniseries is based on a novel written by Catherine Marshall and it is the follow-up to Christy 1994 and Christy: Return to Cutter Gap 2000.  The first night of this series centers on a deadly typhoid epidemic.  This event is the most pivotal point in the novel's adaptation.  This disease preys upon the mountain folk in isolated Cutter Gap.  It causes enormous terror, suffering and leaves great tragedy in its wake.  For many generations, superstition has caused the isolated mountain folk to believe that all real danger comes from outside the Cove.  Doctor MacNeill exhausts himself caring for the people and trying to get them to see that their own water and lack of sanitation is making them sick.  The tragic death of her cherished friend, Fairlight Spencer affects Christy in a cathartic and intimate way.  It sends her into an emotional tailspin, catapulting her into a primal crisis of faith.  She begins to question the fairness and even the existence of God.  She leans heavily on the faith of David Grantland and accepts his marriage proposal.

This is a good movie for both children and parents.  The entire Christy series, the movie and the mini-series are good.  This story was aired on television in a two parts starring Lauren Lee Smith as Christy Huddleston.  The beginning starts out on a wonderful night in Cutter Gap.  All the residents gather in the Mission House to watch a movie that Christy borrowed for Miss Alice Henderson's birthday.  But as the story moves on, not everything is so peaceful and happy.  A few days later, Doctor Neil MacNeill gives exams to some of the residents.  He discovers that typhoid has come to the good people of Cutter Gap.  Almost everyone becomes ill, except for David Grantland, the young mission preacher.  Christy throws herself into helping Dr. MacNeill care for the ill patients and she tries not to think about her losses.  Miss Alice also tries to help Christy through her troubles.  Miss Alice is battling problems of her own.  Dr. MacNeill soon finds out about Christy's choice to marry David and he decides to leave the Cove?  He would rather leave than see the woman he loves marry another man!!  5* (I really liked this series)
