After Earth 2013

One thousand years after a cataclysmic event forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home.  General Cypher Raige returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family.  Raige has decided he is ready to be a father to his 13-year-old-son Kitai.  An astroid storm damages the Cyher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth.  Raige is injured in the crash and Kitai will have to trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon.
This movie has a scary monster movie with a few dead bodies and some blood!!  The alien monster is grotesque, overpowering and able to trick humans into feeling fear.  Some of his human victims are impaled on three branches.  None of the main characters die but a majestic eagle saves a boy’s life and sacrifices his own life to save the boy.  There are also animal carcasses, exciting and violent sci-fi action.  On the good side, there are laughs and scenes of strong family warmth and bonding with strong role models and positive life lessons learned.  I thought it was interesting to see the human-free Earth and also to see slight evolution in the animals.  The flora remains unchanged.  Also, interesting to study the details, the CGI and special features and effects.  3 1/2* (I liked this movie)

Special Note:  Filmed in Humboldt County, California; La Fortuna, San Carlos, Costa Rica; Utah; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Switzerland; Sierra County, New Mexico; Aston, Pennsylvania; Iceland; Kanton, Bern, Switzerland.  Not credited on the finished film is that Will Smith was responsible for much of the movie’s direction.  Shyamalan was primarily in charge of the composition of shots, placement of the cameras and visual aspects of the film.  The original film was 130 minutes long and included more of a backstory on the decline of the Earth.  The idea for the film came from a father and son camping trip.  The car they are traveling in careens off the road and the son makes his way through the forest to find help for the father.  Realizing these ideas had a greater potential, it was adapted from a basic survival concept to a much larger science fiction project.  The original story idea is by Will Smith and the film was produced by his film company Overbrook Entertainment.  One review stated that Smith paid to have movie maid and also paid to have his son included in the cast?
